For great putting, you must control the ball with roll

Great golfers on tour control their shots with types of spin. Similarly, in putting, we control the golf ball by making it roll end over end. You see, the ability to roll the ball is more important than the technicalities of your stroke. You can have a great stroke and not roll the ball, or a funny or idiosyncratic stroke that works and does roll the ball beautifully.

So why is roll so important? Well, for a start a rolling ball tends to hold its line much better. When a ball stops rolling, it falls off the line. The other thing is that our on-board computer judges distance and distance control on the assumption of a rolling ball. If a ball bobbles or bounces or skids, the on-board computer gets confused. It's the rolling ball that allows the subconscious mind to precisely and accurately judge the distance.
